DETAILS OF THE PROJECT IS GIVEN BELOW FOR YOUR INFORMATION:

PROJECT: There is a large number of Black, Asian and Minority Ethic (BAME) people in Sheffield who are financially affected due to COVID-19. They are also infected by COVID-19 too. The BBC recently reported as ‘Disproportionate impact on BAME groups' with '34% of critically ill coronavirus patients of BAME backgrounds'. The proposed ECP will provide immediate support to the disaffected community e.g. assisting with benefit claim such as universal credits, helping to fill relevant form to claim business support grant, advising on funeral dealing, advising how to request suppression of mortgages and utility bills, assisting in claiming job retention grant, directing family to best online education support materials for their children , holding regular virtual classes for adults with ZOOM/SKYPE/WHATS’UP technology to enhance confidence.

DIFFERENCE: Our research indicated BAME people are too much worried about finance and about to have mental break down. Our bilingual staff of the project will make a positive difference via linking with the community and providing disaffected community people vital relevant information including advice and teaching in COVID-19 related issues.

BENEFICIARIES: With the funding, we want to help a significant number of grass root BAME people to overcome basic barriers and boost confidence during the COVID-19 lockdown. LENGTH: The project will be run for one year, starting during the COVID-19 lock down period and continuing during the post COVID-19 period.

PUBLICITY: The marketing and advertising relating to this project will be based on high quality radio advert, posters, texts, e-mail shots and individual contacts.

FUTURE: This is a new project providing Emergency COVID-19 Support and helping to boost confidence of demoralized BAME community people. Its outcome for future development will be critically evaluated from appraisal and feedback. It is very much anticipated to continue the project for a long time once the funding is ended.

COMMUITY INVOLMENT:

Our research during COVID-19 pandemic period based on regular chat with over 300 grassroots community & board members indicated BAME people are too much worried about their finance and about to have mental break down. Many BAME people due to language barrier has asked us to help them to fill relevant form to apply for various financial supports from UK government. They have also asked us to set up this project so large number of people can benefit too. Furthermore, in 2019, we held a ‘taster well-being and education day’, which attracted over 200 diverse BAME community members . From feedback analysis, it was noted that there was numerous requests from the participants for basic education, health and confidence building teaching. Also, we have received repeated requests via telephone from over 200 BAME people for same activities as mentioned above. The BAME people are also willing to get involved in the project on voluntary capacity to increase manpower and boost their confidence. They have indicated to be part of development of the project as well as being in the steering group to assess the project success. We are very happy to have them and we will provide necessary induction training. ABOVE ARE THREE  VIDEOS SHOWING SOFT EXERCISES FROM THE CABS SUPPORTED BY AWARDS FOR ALL (NATIONAL LOTTERY).

The Champions for Achieving Better Health in Sheffield, or CABS campaign was set up to tackle health inequalities within black, minority ethnic groups.

These include the fact that South Asian men are 50 per cent more likely to die prematurely from coronary heart disease, and have a higher than average prevalence of strokes and type two diabetes. Health checks and vascular screening was offered to taxi drivers and, of the 80 drivers who attended, 35 per cent were called back for further checks, 13 per cent received further treatment, and one driver was found to be "dangerously ill". In total 217 drivers were screened for high cholesterol, raised blood pressure and their BMI measurements, and were also given advice on how to lead healthy lifestyles. The success of the project, shortlisted for an award by the Health Service Journal, has now seen it expanded to include other high risk groups. It was run by NHS Sheffield in partnership with the Sheffield City GP Health Centre and Sheffield Taxi Trade Association. Permjeet Dhoot, project lead at NHS Sheffield, said: "It is wonderful news that all our hard work is being recognised.

"We have made a great difference to the lives of Sheffield taxi drivers and have helped them to make better decisions about their health." Hafeas Rehman, chairman of the Sheffield Taxi Trade Association, said: " I now believe that many taxi drivers have improved health and lifestyles and I feel confident that this will continue. "The message will spread."
